I was a student of yours in 1984 and I have warm memories of you. I was a "C" student, but you encouraged me to study harder and I finished with a "B" in your advanced biology class.

I'm almost finished reading your book, and I'm not a reading person. I have loved every word and you have enlightened me on a lot of world problems I was never aware of. Thank you so much for writing it. It is an absolutely wonderful book.

Thank you so much for putting it together. I got it in the mail today and just reading the first few pages took me right back to the streets of Sheikh Abdullah Road. Oh boy, Ican smell those samosas and the fragrant nuts in the Irani Bazaar

It is a very, very well reasoned and quite comprehensive book. I found the tone very respectful as it dissected and uncovered the layers in a very thorough and systematic way. I really enjoyed reading it in totality.

Excellent book. I was there from 1979-1982 and this brings back some very good memories, especially the picture on page 198! I recommend this to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of life overseas growing up during the development of a nation.

At a time when anxiety and fear slant opinions regarding the Middle East, it is refreshing to read about the ordinary, everyday lives of a culture very different from our own. Kay Chaudhri shares how her teaching experiences taught her to know and love these people, to embrace our similarities, and to better understand and accept our differences.

For me this book was a journey into a country I didn’t even know existed. I learned about Middle Eastern peoples and their cultures and came to better understand Islam, an important subject in these times and one about which I knew very little. I learned how Khomeini came to power in Iran, and how his influence on the Islamic religious right aggravated divisions between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. Above all, however, the book descries a very special country and its people.
